Summer Showers Bring Divers Flowers...Including a Puppy Named "Iris"

Due to the large amounts of rain we have received over the past months, the Abbey is abounding with flora. We also welcomed another "flower" into our community this summer: Iris, a sweet Great Pyrenees Newfoundland puppy. She is getting along well with our two other dogs, Simon and Samwise, except when she makes the mistake of pursuing Simon's tail as a chew toy. Like all of us, she is learning some lessons the hard way!

A Silver Jubilee on the Solemnity of St. John the Baptist

Our Sister Scholastica England, OSB, celebrated 25 years of monastic profession on June 24, 2019, the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Her Sisters, family and friends joined us for Holy Mass and a beautiful reception at the Abbey. Mass was celebrated by Rev. Cyprian Constantine, OSB, of St. Vincent Archabbey, who was our chaplain 25 years ago and presided over Sr. Scholastica’s First Profession.

Sr. Scholastica was born and raised in Louisville.  Her siblings and their families and other relatives were present for the Jubilee celebration.

She attended Bellarmine University in Louisville and received a double major in Theology and Math, then went on to graduate school at Marquette in Wisconsin to study Scripture.  After eleven years of working for Xerox, she chose Benedictine life as the best way to pray the Scriptures she had studied, so she entered the Abbey of St. Walburga, then in Boulder, CO, in 1991.

She has since served the community in many roles.  As Mother Maria Michael mentioned in her speech to the community in honor of Sr. Scholastica’s Silver Jubilee, “Twenty-five years is no small thing, and she has served so faithfully and humbly that many things she has done have gone unnoticed. But today we bless her and acknowledge the great gift that she is to our community, fully aware that we don’t even know the half of it.”

Thank you, Sr. Scholastica, for your 25 years of fidelity to God in our community, and thanks to all who joined us in celebrating her!
